Reaction to formula: Spit up, sleepiness, vomiting, gas, diarrhea...
Reaction to Gerber rice: Vomiting, lethragy, dehydration, shock...
I never thought about him throwing up formula on occasion because I either blamed it on him being too full or he just was sensitive to the formula, so after he put the weight on we abandoned formula and he has been EBF ever since.
First Hospitalization Dec 18th, 2009
It was probably his 2nd or 3rd time having the rice cereal when he had his first reaction. He had eaten the cereal and then was BF. Immediately after BFing he vomited a large volume of fluids. Again, "maybe he was too full".."maybe I sat him up too quickly"...So decided to head out for the day and get some Christmas shopping in with my mom(Thank God she is a nurse) By the time that we got to the mall Killian was really sleepy and we thought he must being getting sick so we put him in the Moby and started to walk in when he started throwing up every 3 mins or so and was becoming unresponsive so we rushed him to Urgent Care and he got 3 immediate bolus' and started perking up after them but since he is EBF and was still throwing up I opted to have him hospitalized with an IV until he stopped getting sick so he wouldn't get dehydrated again. The hospital said that he had a stomach virus and that I should BF him every 15 mins for 3-5 mins and slowly increase the time so he would be able to handle eating. That worked and we had our happy baby boy back!
Second Hospitalization Dec 23rd, 2009
This time we thought he was over his stomach bug and he was BFing great again and decided it would be okay to give him some more rice. After about a teaspoon of rice(he wouldn't eat it) and hour later, he vomited and slowy turned an ashy gray color and again became lethargic, so we skipped the urgent care and took him straight back to the Childrens hospital. We had to go to the ER to get admitted. The ER staff was hesitant in putting in an IV line because he was only 5 months old and they don't like doing it on babies.
Anyways they decided to go ahead with the IV when the blood test low and behold came up as him being dehydrated. I told them he was just in there for a stomach bug, but what stomach bug comes and goes in a matter of 5 days and cause a baby to get that sick and then get better with fluids?! It took two nurses and 3 attempts to get a line in. The nurse was so upset becuase she was moving the needle around in his tiny arm and he was just laying there. No tears. No flinching. That is the reason they decided to keep us, cause he wasn't responding to pain. After the vomiting stoped we were released the next day.
We suspected either an allergy or celiacs and I waited to get back home to see his PED. She was no help and didn't seem concerned at his reaction. So at my older sons 2yr well baby I brought it up to his Dr and he was quite the opposite. He was very concerned and said not to give him anymore soy and he gave us an epipen jr to keep handy in case, because of the shock. So now both boys are seeing the same Dr. We saw the nutritionist and she gave us info on soy allergies and I started my research. Everything I read wasn't really describing my son's reaction. Low blood pressure or being grayish was the only thing in common with the allergy and I was frustrated that it didn't make sense and then I saw the link for FPIES to soy. As I read everything I wanted to cry, it was like a re-enactment of the two reactions! I have now given the Dr the info and he hasn't heard of this before so we will see what he says at the 12month well baby! He has cautioned us with milk, he said to rub it on his skin and if he turns red or gets a rash not to give him any. If his skin shows no reaction to start with a TSP and wait and see. He has eaten yogurt bites so we will see, he only gets a little red after eating those.
So now I start my adventure keeping soy out of the hands of my 10 month old :) and trying to find a yummy soy free recipe for his 1st birthday cake!
